MEDIA RELEASE LET’S BEE LOCAL Tm
It has been evident for a while that our reliance on foreign bees is not working. Innumerable problems have arisen because of it. Local bees are Better Bees. Ensure Hive Future has a sustainable solution that we will be able to rely on for many years to come and Let’s Bee Local is at the heart of it.
Who are we?
Ensure Hive Future is a Federal Non-Profit organization with the purpose of apiary research and education. We are a grassroots group focused on community engagement with a volunteer network of more than 150 people. It is our mission to “Follow the Science for the Bees.”
What is Let’s Bee Local?
Our community outreach program Let’s Bee Local is a partnership with local apiaries and suppliers that aims to provide local, sustainable, Better Bees.
We will be doing field days in communities throughout Vancouver Island, G.V.R.D and the Fraser Valley. The first will be at Top Shelf Feeds in Duncan on July 4 .
What will be offered?
1. We will help backyard and small-scale beekeepers multiply their colonies by teaching them how to split their colonies
2. Beekeepers can test their bees with us to see if they are able to fight AFB
3. We will help beekeepers get the best genetics for their bees
4. Beekeepers can ask their beekeeping questions to true experts
5. We will have educational programs
Going into Winter with 2 local Better Bee colonies is a setup for success. Dual Queening increases the survival rate of the colonies providing contingency and more colonies for the following Spring. Let’s all be a part of making local Better Bees and increasing food security and sovereignty in our communities.
Alistair MacGregor MP: “As the NDP Critic for Agriculture and Agri-Food and a small- scale farmer, I am well aware of the importance of the work being done by Ensure Hive Future to protect decreasing bee populations. Pollinating insects, primarily bees, play a role in the pollination of 70% of flowering plants and honeybees contribute more than $2.2 billion to Canada's agricultural economy each year.
It is my hope that through grass roots projects, such as Ensure Hive Future, and political opposition to government policies that hinder bee and other pollinator populations, a national strategy can be developed to address the multiple factors related to bee colony deaths.”
Executive Director Iain Glass: “Let’s Bee Local represents the ongoing hard work of Grass Roots Beekeepers who are seeking local sustainable solutions to larger environmental concerns. This year with COVID-19 transportation disruptions, Canada was short over 45,000 colonies. Our dependency on foreign imports is NOT sustainable. We are seeking to provide Better Bees not only for Vancouver Island but also for British Columbia.” ...
