This 6-hour immersive course offers you an opportunity to learn the fundamentals of beekeeping. Whether you are new to beekeeping, or just need to be refreshed on the fundamentals, this course will give you a solid understanding of beginner beekeeping.

Taught by experienced and skilled beekeepers passionate about bees and sustainable practices, you will leave with a beginner understanding of the knowledge and methods to properly care for these wonderful creatures.

We are out to set you up for success. This course will give you enough information and resources to put you on a trajectory for success through hands on field experience.

Topics to be covered include:

  • Regulations around bees (B.C. and municipal)
  • Basic bee types and facts (plus understanding how things can go wrong with “Save the Bees”)
  • Types of homes that bees desire versus the types of equipment humans add to hives
  • Additional Equipment
  • Obtaining bees – packages, NUCS, swarms, splits
  • Spring Preparation
  • Hive Inspection, record keeping and understanding colony health
  • Swarm Management
  • Re-Queening
  • Summer management
  • Honey Extraction
  • Fall/Winter management
  • Pests and diseases (conventional management, sustainable management, “Better Bees”)
  • Further resources / suggested reading

Cost: $175 (course materials and protective wear will be provided)

At the end of the course, you will get to take home a jar of honey!
